Zwe Mon was born in Yangon in 1990. Encouraged by her father, a comic artist and illustrator, she attended the State School of Fine Arts in Yangon from 2006 to 2009. Since graduation, she has worked as a full-time artist. This painting of the 8-8-88 uprising, with Sule Pagoda in the background, focuses on the mass movement for democracy that galvanized much of the country in the middle months of 1988. It was towards the end of the uprising that Aung San Suu Kyi rose to political prominence.
