This series of three paintings depict three national statues: The United States’ Statue of Liberty with the goddess Libertas; Berlin’s Siegessäule (“Victory Column”) with Victoria, the goddess of victory; and the Soviet Union’s Rodina-Mat’ zovyot (“The Motherland Calls”), a representation of the country herself. These three countries dominated the world affairs since the 19th century. Although the three statues emblazons vastly different national values and ideology, they have subtle similarities as well. This series aims to explore and compare the statues’ composition, and also the national ideology that gave birth to them.
