Turkish Kaval
The kaval is an end-blown shepherd’s flute that is widespread in Turkey and in Southeastern Europe.
The kaval is primarily a pastoral instrument, used by shepherds to keep animals calm when grazing. In Turkey, contemporary musicians have developed it into an instrument suitable for various types of light folk songs and dances as well as for serious, lyrical songs. It is also one of the most popular instruments in Bulgaria.
The Turkish kaval can be made of wood, cane, bone or metal, and comes in various sizes and constructional features, such as the use of a fipple or additional materials such as reed and metal.
